I know that most of these "rules" could go unstated but I am posting a list here anyway so that we can all know that we are on the same page.

Be willing to change your mind. This isn’t about winning or losing its about coming closer to the truth.
Be magnanimous in victory. If you appear to have proved your point, don’t be a dick about it.
Because we can’t see or hear each other, always be sure to take the most charitable interpretation of someone’s response until they conclusively indicate otherwise.
Don’t write a dissertation. Be as concise as you can.
No ad hominem attacks. Engage with the persons argument. Their personal character or behavior is rarely relevant.
Always try to steel man someone else’s position. Put another way, try to imagine and respond to a version of someone else’s position that is the strongest version and the most representative of what they think.
Feel free to provide sources (articles, studies, statistics, videos, etc.) but please at least summarize the general content as it pertains to your point. Don’t rely solely on someone having the time (or desire) to check your sources.
Remember that your personal experience is only relevant to a limited extent.

Feel free to comment on any of these if you feel they should be amended or removed or if you feel something should be added that isn't there already.
